THE SCHOOL
George Washington Carver Vocational-Technical HS is a single site, joint college preparatory high school and career-technology center that is fully accredited and certified. Carver was founded in 1925 and is a city-wide competitive coed academic institution which requires an application process and selection of an individual career path. Career pathways have been established by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
Thousands of Carver graduates serve the Baltimore community in leadership roles as well as entrepreneurship, government service, and technical trades. Our goal is to equip our graduates to be successful in the world of work or at college. The school seeks to be the career center school of choice for Baltimore City students.
The Carver staff, directed and assisted by the Office of Career and Technology Education, provides high quality career-technology, business and finance programs that are relevant in terms of local market needs and consistent with national trends. During their tenure at Carver, students will be prepared to meet the certification standards of their selected major as well as being prepared for college admission. Accommodations are made for those students with special needs that otherwise meet the requirements

THE CURRICULUM
All students take four years of English, Science, and Mathematics to include Pre-Calculus. In addition two years of a foreign language and three years of a career technology program are required.

Entrance requirements for Career Technology programs:
Carver’s programs require a composite score of 475 or higher. Students are ranked and admitted as space is available according to their composite scores.
Business Management & Finance:
This program provides the students with knowledge of the types of businesses, as well as various applications, laws and theories of a business. Administrative services, business management, finance and accounting and marketing are some of the areas of instruction. An in depth working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.
Design Technology/CAD:
This course concentrates on basic drafting, architectural drafting, and 3D Max. It places a strong emphasis on math, especially geometry and trigonometry.
Careers in Cosmetology:
Offers 1500 hours of instruction and practice to qualify for the State Board of Cosmetologists licensure examination and includes classroom instruction, clinical experience, and work-based learning. The program prepares individuals to care for and beautify hair, skin, and nails. Emphasis is placed on hygiene, safety and sanitation as well as State Board of Cosmetologists’ rules and regulations.
Early Childhood Education/Child Care:
Child care is a 90 hour certificate earning program for students interested in working with children in a pre-school setting. Instruction includes child growth and development, selecting, planning, and presenting learning experiences, and identifying goals. The school runs a licensed day care center for the student’s practical experiences.
CISCO Networking (CCNA):
This course is a practical introduction to the field of networking. Students will learn to install and configure Cisco switches and routers in multi-protocol networks using local-and wide-area networks, provide Level 1 troubleshooting service, and improve network performance and security.
Food and Beverage Management (ProStart):
This program supports the implementation of the ProStart curriculum developed by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation. The program introduces students to careers in restaurant, foodservice, and hospitality industry.
Graphic Design & Printing (PrintEd):
Printing covers the basic operations of offset printing. Photocomposition, desktop publishing, and computer generated images compliment the traditional methods of preparing forms for the offset press. This course is in the process of National Certification in PrintEd.
Construction Trades (NCCER):
The construction trades programs are CTE programs based on National Center for Construction Educations and Research standards that lead to a national certification for those students that complete the curriculum
Carpentry:
The program option provides an opportunity to learn about the home building industry. The students work with wood building materials, hand and power tools, floor systems, wall and ceiling framing, and windows and exterior doors. They also learn to read plans and elevations, site layout, concrete and reinforcing materials, foundations, and concrete forms.
Electrical Construction:
The program provides students an opportunity to learn about residential and commercial building industry and to master a variety of electrical skills.
Masonry:
This trade includes all the basic operations of bricklaying: mixing and spreading mortar, cutting and laying bricks and blocks, including the construction of walls, piers, steps, pilasters, and other brick and block laying projects.
